COVID-19 DivulgAÇÃO Científica

About reviewed project
COVID-19 DivulgAÇÃO Científica is a science communication initiative in portuguese that aims to bring reliable information about the new coronavirus and the disease caused by it, COVID-19. We produce videos, infographics and articles.

COVID19 DivulgAção Científica

We are a Brazilian scientific dissemination initiative and we take reliable information about the new coronavirus and COVID-19 in video, infographics and materials format in Portuguese and in the Brazilian Sign Language with subtitles.

With the pandemic, we see, on the one hand, a great need for people to be informed about the virus and the disease, but, on the other hand, a flood of information that is often contradictory and even fake news.

Luisa Massarani, coordinator of the National Institute of Public Communication for Science and Technology and coordinator of the COVID19 DivulgAção Científica initiative.

1. Introduction

Problem and Background

According to the World Health Organization, the response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by an excess of information, some accurate and some not, which make it difficult to find suitable sources and reliable guidance in relation to various aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this context, the initiative COVID19 DivulgAção Científica appears with the intention of providing subsidies to citizens so that they make well-informed decisions and that help in controlling the spread of the virus. It is also our goal to appreciate the importance of international and Brazilian science in facing the pandemic.

Solution summary in simple terms

Every week we produce original content about scientific aspects of the virus and the disease, current events, and also how science - with an emphasis on Brazilian science - has faced the pandemic. During the week we published two videos, an infographic and a story on our social networks and website.

Solution summary in technical terms

For the videos, we curate and research the topic, interviews with researchers, voiceover, editing the videos, sending Libras for translation, transcribing the interviews for the production of subtitles, image research, thumbnails production, finalization of the video, review of the video, writing the description and publishing on the website and social networks.

For infographics, we produce the script, which goes through review, and then the original art and design is created. Upon completion, there is one more review, description writing and publication on the website and social networks.

We approach two aspects in the materials. In the first, we demystified fake news and misinformation about the pandemic through interviews with experts in the field. In the second part, we address the scientific articles produced by the National Institute of Public Communication of Science and Technology. For this, we researched topics, conducted interviews with specialist researchers in the area, wrote the article, which is under review, created an exclusive cover for each article and publication on the website and social networks.

State of advancement of the project

We have been producing content since April 2020, so we are almost completing a year taking information and demystifying false news about the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, we continue to develop original content with the same objective.
