Faircap Low cost E.coli Open Water Lab

We have developed a simple, extremely low cost, portable and lightweight testing kit to test for fecal contamination in water samples anywhere in the world. We would like to build an open science community around this kit to create more awareness about water contamination in natural water sources and drinking water supply.

WELCOME TO FAIRCAP!

¿Did you know?

Access to safe drinking water and sanitation was declared a human right by the United Nations in July 2010.

Drinking contaminated water can transmit diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid fever, and polio. it is estimated that more than 502,000 people die from diarrhea each year (WHO, 2019).

About Faircap

Faircap is a collaborative project that openly and collaboratively researches and develops low cost, easy to use and portable point of use water purification and water quality monitoring devices. Around the world, over 2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water. We have developed water filters that use the latest membrane technologies, such as hollow fibres placed in very small form factors, which maintain an optimal flow rate while eliminating pathogens such as bacteria, protozoa, cysts and even viruses.

FAIRCAP E.COLI TESTING KIT

Testing water quality parameters in humanitarian settings and low resource places around the world is often complicated and expensive. One of the ways to know if water is safe to drink is by testing faecal contamination in water. These water quality tests might be expensive and may require a microbiology lab nearby or specialized equipment that is heavy, bulky and that can cost well over $1000.

We have developed a simple, low cost, portable and lightweight testing kit to test for faecal contamination in water samples anywhere in the world.

CHARACTERISTICS

- Portable incubator for E.Coli plates

- Lightweight, fits in a backpack

- 12 - 16 hours to detect faecal contamination

- Low powered (2.5W-h) USB 5.5v phone charger

- Wall, car, battery and solar panel powered

- Cost of US$35, $1.5 per test
