Medical innovation is famed as being extremely expensive, complex and only reserved to high-end companies and laboratories. Because of the R&D cost and amount of risk a company has to take to develop a medical innovation, patents have been the core piece of the Pharma innovation complex. This has created a culture where open source technologies are regarded as detrimental to a successful business model for a Pharma company.
The consequence of this culture is:
(1) a lack of sharing and so a high risk/cost for a single company to making foundational advances alone and
(2) a disregard toward potential technologies/ideas that would be not patentable. But does this have to be the norm? Can open source and communities help bring the cost of medical R&D and products down and make medical services and treatment more globally available?
In this track, we have invited leading open source medical innovation projects and communities to share their motivation, experience and approach to solving a medical problem openly.
